Voorbeelden van stemwerk zijn onder meer geanimeerde, off-stage, off-screen of niet-zichtbare personages in verschillende werken, zoals speelfilms, nagesynchroniseerde films in vreemde talen, animatiefilms, anime, televisieshows, videogames, tekenfilms, documentaires, commercials, audioboeken, radiodrama's en komedies, kermisattracties, theaterproducties, poppenspel en audiospelletjes.
Stemacteurs worden ook gehoord via vooraf opgenomen en geautomatiseerde aankondigingen die deel uitmaken van het dagelijkse moderne leven in gebieden zoals winkels, liften, wachtkamers en openbaar vervoer. De rol van een stemacteur kan gepaard gaan met zingen, meestal bij het spelen van een fictief personage, hoewel een afzonderlijke artiest soms wordt aangeworven als de zangstem van het personage.
