Het trainen van de stem betekent het leren versterken en coördineren van de spieren van het strottenhoofd om een gelijkmatige toonkwaliteit te bereiken en vernauwingen weg te nemen. Op deze manier ontwikkelen we de vocale registers. Elk vocaal register wordt gekenmerkt door een verschillende mate van aangrijping van deze spieren en verschillende resonantiekwaliteiten. De registers bevatten borststem, hoofdstem en falset.
Een soort vocale emissie tussen volle stem en falset wordt "gemengde stem" (mix) genoemd. Dezelfde term kan ook de overgang (passage) van borststem naar hoofdstem aangeven.
Bij een gecoördineerde stem is het verschil in toonkwaliteit tussen borststem en hoofdstem in principe niet waarneembaar. U kunt dit bereiken door middel van vocale oefeningen (vocalises) die de docent op uw stem afstemt. Als je vocaliseert, zing je een toonladder met verschillende lettergrepen en klanken. De volgende stap bestaat uit het toepassen van wat je hebt geleerd op de liedjes die je zingt.
