Om die producten te maken, moeten ze digitaal worden gemodelleerd en ontwikkeld. SOLIDWORKS, een solide computerondersteund ontwerp en computerondersteund engineeringprogramma voor modellering, is een van de meest populaire software-opties voor mechatronica-ingenieurs.
SOLIDWORKS is ontwikkeld door MIT-afgestudeerde Jon Hirschtick en werd in 1997 gekocht door Dassault Systems. De software omvat nu een aantal programma's die kunnen worden gebruikt voor zowel 2D- als 3D-ontwerp.
