Het grote verschil met traditionele planningsmethoden? OKR's worden regelmatig ingesteld, bijgehouden en opnieuw geëvalueerd - meestal elk kwartaal. OKR is een eenvoudig, snel cadansproces dat het perspectief en de creativiteit van elk team betrekt.
Afstemming creëren in de organisatie is een van de belangrijkste voordelen van OKR. Het doel is om ervoor te zorgen dat iedereen dezelfde kant op gaat, met duidelijke prioriteiten, in een constant ritme.
Het oorspronkelijke concept van OKR kwam van Intel en verspreidde zich naar andere Silicon Valley-bedrijven. Google adopteerde OKR in 1999, tijdens het eerste jaar. Het ondersteunde de groei van Google van 40 werknemers tot meer dan 60.000 vandaag.
Naast Google gebruiken andere bedrijven OKR, waaronder Spotify, Twitter, LinkedIn en Airbnb.
Maar het OKR-systeem is niet alleen voor digitale bedrijven. Walmart, Target, The Guardian, Dun and Bradstreet en ING Bank gebruiken ook OKR.
