In het hindoeïsme is Kundalini een vorm van goddelijke vrouwelijke energie (of shakti) waarvan wordt aangenomen dat deze zich aan de basis van de ruggengraat, in de muladhara, bevindt. Het is een belangrijk concept in Śhaiva Tantra, waar wordt aangenomen dat het een kracht of kracht is die wordt geassocieerd met het goddelijke vrouwelijke of het vormloze aspect van de Godin. Aangenomen wordt dat deze energie in het lichaam, wanneer gecultiveerd en gewekt door tantrische beoefening, tot spirituele bevrijding leidt. Kuṇḍalinī wordt geassocieerd met Parvati of Adi Parashakti, het allerhoogste wezen in het shaktisme; en met de godinnen Bhairavi en Kubjika. De term, samen met de daarmee samenhangende praktijken, werd in de 9e eeuw in Hatha yoga overgenomen. Het is sindsdien overgenomen in andere vormen van hindoeïsme, evenals in moderne spiritualiteit en new age-gedachte.
Er wordt gezegd dat het ontwaken van Kuṇḍalinī op verschillende manieren plaatsvindt. Veel yogasystemen richten zich op het ontwaken van Kuṇḍalinī door middel van: meditatie; pranayama ademhaling; het beoefenen van asana en het chanten van mantra's. [6] Kundalini Yoga wordt beïnvloed door het shaktisme en de tantra-scholen van het hindoeïsme. Het ontleent zijn naam aan zijn focus op het ontwaken van kundalini-energie door regelmatige beoefening van Mantra, Tantra, Yantra, Asanas of Meditatie.
