Een Human-Machine Interface (HMI) is een gebruikersinterface of dashboard dat een persoon verbindt met een machine, systeem of apparaat. Hoewel de term technisch kan worden toegepast op elk scherm waarop een gebruiker met een apparaat kan communiceren, wordt HMI meestal gebruikt in de context van een industrieel proces.
Hoewel HMI de meest voorkomende term is voor deze technologie, wordt het ook wel Man-Machine Interface (MMI), Operator Interface Terminal (OIT), Local Operator Interface (LOI) of Operator Terminal (OT) genoemd. HMI en grafische gebruikersinterface (GUI) zijn vergelijkbaar, maar niet synoniem: GUI's worden vaak gebruikt binnen HMI's voor visualisatiemogelijkheden.
