In muziek is een gitaarakkoord een reeks noten die op een gitaar worden gespeeld. De noten van een akkoord worden vaak tegelijkertijd gespeeld, maar ze kunnen opeenvolgend in een arpeggio worden gespeeld. De uitvoering van gitaarakkoorden is afhankelijk van de gitaarstemming. De meeste gitaren die in populaire muziek worden gebruikt, hebben zes snaren met de "standaard" stemming van de Spaanse klassieke gitaar, namelijk E-A-D-G-B-E '(van de laagste tot de hoogste snaar); bij standaardstemming zijn de intervallen die aanwezig zijn tussen aangrenzende snaren perfecte kwarten behalve de grote terts (G, B). Standaardstemming vereist vier akkoordvormen voor de grote drieklanken.
Er zijn afzonderlijke akkoordvormen voor akkoorden met hun grondtoon op de derde, vierde, vijfde en zesde snaar. Voor een zessnarige gitaar met standaardstemming kan het nodig zijn om een of meer tonen uit het akkoord te laten vallen of weg te laten; dit is typisch de wortel of kwint. De lay-out van noten op de toets bij standaardstemming dwingt gitaristen vaak om de toonvolgorde van noten in een akkoord te wijzigen.
