Wat is een front-end developer?
Een front-end developer (ook wel front-end programmeur of front-end ontwikkelaar) is iemand die verantwoordelijk is voor de technische kant van het front-end (de voorkant) van een applicatie, website of programma. Hij zorgt in feite voor de verbinding tussen het design en de programmatuur die nodig is om het te laten functioneren. Veel front-end developers hebben zich gespecialiseerd in een bepaald framework of een specifieke programmeertaal, zodat er bijvoorbeeld .NET-developers, PHP-developers, Java-developers en C++ developers zijn.
Wat betekent front-end?
De term front-end heeft betrekking op het gedeelte van een toepassing dat voor de gebruiker zichtbaar is. Andere benamingen voor deze omgeving zijn user interface (UI) en gebruikersinterface. Front-end development houdt in: het omzetten van een ontwerp van een website of andere toepassing in een technisch goed werkend geheel.
Een toepassing als een website of een app bestaat behalve uit een front-endgedeelte ook uit een back-endomgeving. Zo ziet iemand die iets wil bestellen in een webshop bijvoorbeeld de producten die worden aangeboden en een bestelformulier (deze behoren tot de front-end), maar niet de database waaruit wordt geput voor het weergeven van deze gegevens, aangezien deze behoort tot de back-end.
Wat doet een front-end developer?
Front-end developers ontwerpen, programmeren, testen en implementeren het front-endgedeelte van een toepassing. Ze houden zich bezig met technische aspecten, maar ook met vraagstukken op het gebied van usability (gebruiksvriendelijkheid) en toegankelijkheid. Ze maken vooral gebruik van de programmeertalen HTML en Javascript en van CSS (Cascading Style Sheets)-opmaakelementen.
Voorbeelden van vraagstukken waarmee een front-end developer te maken heeft, zijn:
- Wat is de beste manier om CMS (Content Management Systeem)-templates op te bouwen?
- Hoe creëer je, met behulp van bijvoorbeeld CSS 3, een design dat zo veel mogelijk responsive is, dus dat zich aanpast aan het device waarmee het wordt geopend (mobiel, tablet, pc)?
- Bepalen van de DOCTYPE (Document Type Definition): gebruik je bijvoorbeeld XHTML, HTML4 of HTML5?
- Welke speciale afbeeldingen en animaties gebruik je (bijvoorbeeld Flash, Javascript of SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics))?
- Hoe ga je om met browserverschillen tussen bijvoorbeeld Chrome en Safari?
- Is de inhoud goed afgestemd op de zoekmachine (ook wel SEO: Search Engine Optimization)? Hierbij gaat het niet alleen om een juist gebruik van headings en andere opmaakzaken, maar ook om toepassing van bijvoorbeeld Javascript-plugins: zijn deze goed zichtbaar voor in zoekmachines?
