Wat is E-mailserver ?

Een mailserver (of e-mailserver) is een computersysteem dat e-mail verzendt en ontvangt. In veel gevallen worden webservers en mailservers gecombineerd in één machine. Grote ISP's en openbare e-maildiensten (zoals Gmail en Hotmail) kunnen echter speciale hardware gebruiken voor het verzenden en ontvangen van e-mail.

Om een ​​computersysteem te laten functioneren als een mailserver, moet het mailserver software bevatten. Met deze software kan de systeembeheerder e-mailaccounts maken en beheren voor alle domeinen die op de server worden gehost. Als de server bijvoorbeeld de domeinnaam "techterms.com" host, kan deze e-mailaccounts leveren die eindigen op "@ techterms.com".

E-mailservers verzenden en ontvangen e-mail met behulp van standaard e-mailprotocollen. Het SMTP-protocol verzendt bijvoorbeeld berichten en behandelt uitgaande e-mailverzoeken. De IMAP- en POP3-protocollen ontvangen berichten en worden gebruikt om inkomende e-mail te verwerken. Wanneer u zich aanmeldt bij een mailserver via een webmailinterface of e-mailclient, behandelen deze protocollen alle verbindingen achter de schermen.

Mailserversoftware is beschikbaar voor meerdere platforms. De meest populaire mailserver voor Windows is Microsoft Exchange Server, een enterprise-product dat door grote bedrijven wordt gebruikt. Er zijn echter veel andere opties, waaronder Ipswitch IMail Server, IceWarp Mail Server, MailEnable en hMailServer. Populaire Linux-opties zijn onder meer Exim voor het verzenden van e-mail en Dovecot en Courier voor het ontvangen van e-mail.
