Een synthesizer is een elektronisch muziekinstrument dat audiosignalen genereert. Synthesizers genereren audio via methoden, waaronder subtractieve synthese, additieve synthese en frequentiemodulatiesynthese. Deze geluiden kunnen worden gevormd en gemoduleerd door componenten zoals filters, envelopes en laagfrequente oscillatoren. Synthesizers worden meestal gespeeld met keyboards of bestuurd door sequencers, software of andere instrumenten, vaak via MIDI.
Synthesizer-achtige instrumenten ontstonden halverwege de 20e eeuw in de Verenigde Staten met instrumenten zoals de RCA Mark II, die werd bestuurd met ponskaarten en bestond uit honderden vacuümbuizen. De Moog-synthesizer, ontwikkeld door Robert Moog en voor het eerst verkocht in 1964, wordt gecrediteerd voor baanbrekende analoge syntheseconcepten zoals spanningsgestuurde oscillatoren, envelopes, ruisgeneratoren, filters en sequencers. In 1970 standaardiseerden de kleinere, goedkopere Minimoog synthesizers als zelfstandige instrumenten met ingebouwde toetsenborden, vergeleken met de modulaire synthesizers ervoor. De eerste in massa geproduceerde synthesizer, de Yamaha DX7, werd gelanceerd in 1983 en maakte digitale synthese populair. Softwaresynthesizers kunnen nu worden ingebed op enkele microchips in elk elektronisch apparaat.
