Het Controller Area Network (CAN) is een seriële communicatiebus die is ontworpen voor robuuste en flexibele prestaties in ruwe omgevingen, en in het bijzonder voor industriële en automobieltoepassingen.

Oorspronkelijk uitgevonden door Bosch en later gecodificeerd in de ISO11898-1-norm, definieert CAN de datalink en fysieke laag van het Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) -model, waardoor een low-level netwerkoplossing wordt geboden voor snelle communicatie in voertuigen. In het bijzonder is CAN ontwikkeld om kabelbedrading te verminderen, zodat de afzonderlijke elektronische regeleenheden (ECU's) in een voertuig kunnen communiceren met slechts een enkel paar draden.
