De kettlebell is een gietijzeren of gietstalen bal met een handvat aan de bovenkant (lijkt op een kanonskogel met een handvat). Het wordt gebruikt om vele soorten oefeningen uit te voeren, waaronder ballistische oefeningen die cardiovasculaire training, krachttraining en flexibiliteitstraining combineren. Ze zijn ook de belangrijkste apparatuur die wordt gebruikt bij de gewichthefsport van kettlebell-tillen.

Door hun aard bouwen typische kettlebell-oefeningen kracht en uithoudingsvermogen op, vooral in de onderrug, benen en schouders, en vergroten ze de grijpkracht. De basisbewegingen, zoals de zwaai, de snatch en de clean and jerk, grijpen het hele lichaam tegelijk aan en op een manier die de activiteiten van de echte wereld nabootst, zoals scheppen of boerenwerk.

In tegenstelling tot de oefeningen met halters of halters, omvatten kettlebell-oefeningen grote aantallen herhalingen in de sport en kunnen ze ook grote herhalingen omvatten tijdens normale training. Kettlebell-oefeningen zijn van nature holistisch; daarom werken ze meerdere spieren tegelijk en kunnen ze continu worden herhaald gedurende enkele minuten of met korte pauzes. Deze combinatie maakt de oefening gedeeltelijk aëroob en meer vergelijkbaar met intervaltraining met hoge intensiteit in plaats van met traditioneel gewichtheffen. In een onderzoek uit 2010 werd gemeten dat kettlebell-enthousiastelingen die een snatch-training van 20 minuten uitvoerden, gemiddeld 13,6 calorieën / minuut aëroob en 6,6 calorieën / minuut anaëroob verbrandden tijdens de hele training - "gelijk aan het rennen van een mijltempo van 6 minuten". Bij het trainen met veel herhalingen, moet de progressie van de kettlebell langzaam beginnen om het uithoudingsvermogen van de spieren op te bouwen, de gewrichten te ondersteunen en blessures te voorkomen.
