Wat is jazz?
Jazz is een soort muziek waarin improvisatie typisch een belangrijk onderdeel is. Bij de meeste jazzuitvoeringen spelen spelers solo's die ze ter plekke verzinnen, wat een aanzienlijke vaardigheid vereist. Er is een enorme variatie in jazz, maar de meeste jazz is erg ritmisch, heeft een voorwaarts momentum dat 'swing' wordt genoemd en gebruikt 'gebogen' of 'blauwe' noten. In de jazz hoor je vaak 'call-and-response'-patronen, waarbij het ene instrument, de stem of een deel van de band een ander instrument beantwoordt. (Je kunt Ella Fitzgerald en Roy Eldridge horen "roepen en reageren" in Ella's zangles.) Jazz kan veel verschillende emoties uitdrukken, van pijn tot pure vreugde. In jazz hoor je misschien de geluiden van vrijheid - want de muziek is een krachtige stem geweest voor mensen die oneerlijk werden behandeld vanwege de kleur van de huid of omdat ze in een land woonden dat werd geleid door een wrede dictator.
