Automobielontwerp is een creatief proces dat wordt gebruikt om het fysieke uiterlijk van motorvoertuigen zoals auto's, vrachtwagens, motorfietsen enz. Te definiëren. Het omvat interieur- en exterieurontwerp.
De belangrijkste uitdaging van Automotive Design is om enerzijds aerodynamica, esthetiek en ergonomie te combineren en anderzijds toch te voldoen aan de typegoedkeuringsvoorschriften, die veiligheidsvoorschriften zijn. Om ervoor te zorgen dat een voertuig aerodynamisch is, moet het exterieurontwerp verschillende essentiële vormen bevatten: rondingen, de schouder, een wig, enz.
De ontwerper van het auto-interieur gaat de uitdaging aan om alle componenten van de auto in elkaar te passen met behoud van zijn esthetiek en comfort. Ontwerpers zijn ook verantwoordelijk voor het selecteren van de materialen waarvan de verschillende onderdelen van het voertuig zullen worden gemaakt: stof, plastic, metaal, evenals het bekledingspakket. Een bekledingspakket is een set versieringen die op de auto zijn aangebracht, zoals: verfpatronen, bumpers, houten sierlijsten, enz.
Auto-ontwerpers vertalen hun ideeën eerst in handgetekende schetsen en vervolgens in computer-gerenderde afbeeldingen met behulp van CAD (computer-aided design), een geavanceerde 3D-software. Maar dit zijn slechts de eerste stappen van het hele creatieve proces en zijn niet voldoende om het ontwerp van een auto of vrachtwagen volledig te beoordelen.
