Vermogenselektronica is de toepassing van solid-state elektronica bij de regeling en omzetting van elektrisch vermogen.

De eerste elektronische apparaten met een hoog vermogen waren kwikboogkleppen. In moderne systemen wordt de conversie uitgevoerd met halfgeleiderschakelaars zoals diodes, thyristors en vermogenstransistors zoals de vermogens-MOSFET en IGBT. In tegenstelling tot elektronische systemen die zich bezighouden met het verzenden en verwerken van signalen en gegevens, worden in vermogenselektronica aanzienlijke hoeveelheden elektrische energie verwerkt. Een AC / DC-omzetter (gelijkrichter) is het meest typische vermogenselektronica-apparaat dat in veel consumentenelektronica wordt aangetroffen, bijv. televisietoestellen, personal computers, batterijladers, enz. Het vermogensbereik loopt typisch van tientallen watt tot enkele honderden watt. In de industrie is een veel voorkomende toepassing de frequentieregelaar (VSD) die wordt gebruikt om een inductiemotor aan te sturen. Het vermogensbereik van VSD's begint bij een paar honderd watt en eindigt bij tientallen megawatt.
