Ruimtelijke analyse of ruimtelijke statistiek omvat elk van de formele technieken die entiteiten bestuderen met behulp van hun topologische, geometrische of geografische eigenschappen. Ruimtelijke analyse omvat een verscheidenheid aan technieken, waarvan vele nog in de kinderschoenen staan, waarbij verschillende analytische benaderingen worden gebruikt en toegepast op uiteenlopende gebieden als astronomie, met haar studies naar de plaatsing van sterrenstelsels in de kosmos, tot chipfabricagetechniek, met het gebruik van " plaats en route "algoritmen om complexe bedradingsstructuren te bouwen. In meer beperkte zin is ruimtelijke analyse de techniek die wordt toegepast op structuren op menselijke schaal, met name bij de analyse van geografische gegevens.
Bij ruimtelijke analyse ontstaan complexe vraagstukken, waarvan er vele niet duidelijk gedefinieerd of volledig opgelost zijn, maar de basis vormen voor huidig onderzoek. De meest fundamentele hiervan is het probleem van het bepalen van de ruimtelijke locatie van de bestudeerde entiteiten.
Classificatie van de technieken van ruimtelijke analyse is moeilijk vanwege het grote aantal verschillende betrokken onderzoeksgebieden, de verschillende fundamentele benaderingen die kunnen worden gekozen en de vele vormen die de gegevens kunnen aannemen.
