Poëzie is een vorm van literatuur die esthetische en vaak ritmische kwaliteiten van taal gebruikt - zoals fonesthetiek, klanksymboliek en metrum - om betekenissen op te roepen in naast of in plaats van de prozaïsche ogenschijnlijke betekenis.
Poëzie heeft een lange geschiedenis - die teruggaat tot de prehistorie met jachtpoëzie in Afrika, en tot prijzige en elegische hofpoëzie van de rijken van de Nijl, Niger en de Volta River-valleien. Enkele van de vroegste geschreven poëzie in Afrika komt voor in de piramideteksten die in de 25e eeuw vGT zijn geschreven. De vroegst bewaard gebleven West-Aziatische epische poëzie, het Gilgamesj-epos, werd in het Soemerisch geschreven.
Poëzie gebruikt vormen en conventies om verschillende interpretaties van woorden te suggereren, of om emotionele reacties op te roepen. Apparaten zoals assonantie, alliteratie, onomatopee en ritme kunnen muzikale of bezwerende effecten overbrengen. Het gebruik van ambiguïteit, symboliek, ironie en andere stilistische elementen van poëtische dictie laat een gedicht vaak open voor meerdere interpretaties. Evenzo vestigen spraakfiguren zoals metafoor, vergelijking en metonymie [5] een resonantie tussen anderszins ongelijksoortige beelden - een gelaagdheid van betekenissen, die verbindingen vormen die voorheen niet werden waargenomen. Er kunnen verwante vormen van resonantie bestaan, tussen individuele verzen, in hun rijm- of ritmepatronen.
