Grafisch ontwerp is een ambacht waarbij professionals visuele inhoud creëren om boodschappen over te brengen. Door visuele hiërarchie- en paginalay-outtechnieken toe te passen, gebruiken ontwerpers typografie en afbeeldingen om aan de specifieke behoeften van gebruikers te voldoen en richten ze zich op de logica van het weergeven van elementen in interactieve ontwerpen om de gebruikerservaring te optimaliseren.

Grafisch ontwerp is een oud ambacht, dat teruggaat tot voorbij Egyptische hiërogliefen tot minstens 17.000 jaar oude grotschilderingen. Het is een term die zijn oorsprong vindt in de grafische industrie van de jaren twintig. Het blijft een reeks activiteiten omvatten, waaronder het maken van logo's. Grafische vormgeving in deze zin heeft betrekking op esthetische aantrekkingskracht en marketing. Grafische ontwerpers trekken kijkers met afbeeldingen, kleur en typografie.
