Letselpreventie is een poging om de ernst van lichamelijk letsel veroorzaakt door externe mechanismen, zoals ongevallen, te voorkomen of te verminderen voordat deze zich voordoen. Letselpreventie is een onderdeel van veiligheid en volksgezondheid en heeft tot doel de gezondheid van de bevolking te verbeteren door letsel te voorkomen en daarmee de kwaliteit van leven te verbeteren. Onder leken wordt vaak de term "accidenteel letsel" gebruikt. "Per ongeluk" houdt echter in dat de oorzaken van verwondingen willekeurig van aard zijn. Onderzoekers gebruiken de term "onopzettelijke verwonding" om te verwijzen naar verwondingen die niet opzettelijk maar te voorkomen zijn. Binnen de volksgezondheid worden ook inspanningen geleverd om "opzettelijk letsel" te voorkomen of te verminderen.
