Webmapping of online mapping is het gebruik van de kaarten die worden geleverd door geografische informatiesystemen (GIS) op internet, meer bepaald op het World Wide Web (WWW). Een webkaart of online kaart wordt zowel geserveerd als gebruikt, dus webmapping is meer dan alleen webcartografie, het is een dienst waarmee consumenten kunnen kiezen wat de kaart laat zien. Web GIS legt de nadruk op aspecten van de verwerking van geodata die meer te maken hebben met ontwerpaspecten zoals data-acquisitie en serversoftwarearchitectuur zoals dataopslag en algoritmen, dan dat de eindgebruiker zelf rapporteert.
De termen web GIS en webmapping blijven enigszins synoniem. Web GIS maakt gebruik van webkaarten en eindgebruikers die webmapping gebruiken, krijgen analytische mogelijkheden. De term locatiegebaseerde services verwijst naar consumptiegoederen en -services voor webmapping. Webmapping omvat meestal een webbrowser of een andere user-agent die in staat is tot client-server-interacties. Kwaliteit, bruikbaarheid, sociale voordelen en juridische beperkingen zijn de motor achter de evolutie.
De komst van webmapping kan worden beschouwd als een belangrijke nieuwe trend in de cartografie. Tot voor kort was cartografie beperkt tot een paar bedrijven, instituten en kaartbureaus, waarvoor relatief dure en complexe hardware en software nodig was, evenals bekwame cartografen en geomatica-ingenieurs.
