VFX Compositing integreert naadloos digitale assets met live-action beelden om het uiteindelijke shot van een film of game samen te brengen.
Compositing is de laatste stap van de VFX-pijplijn. Een bekwame Compositor legt verschillende elementen samen op een manier die het lijkt alsof ze van nature in dezelfde ruimte thuishoren. Om een voorbeeld te geven: een productiebedrijf fotografeert een achtergrond (ook wel een plaat genoemd) met daarin een gebouw van dichtbij en een stadsgezicht erachter. De animator heeft een raket geanimeerd en de effectkunstenaar heeft rookeffecten en een explosie met vernietiging van gebouwen toegevoegd.
Zodra dit allemaal is weergegeven, legt de Compositor de raket, rook, explosie en vernietiging van gebouwen in het schot, met behulp van zaken als kleurcorrectie en z-diepte om alles samen te brengen. Z-diepte is in feite een zwart-witweergave van de diepte van een object in een scène en is erg belangrijk bij het samenstellen van 3D-elementen.
De Compositor kan de leiding hebben over het creëren van hele werelden of het samenvoegen van werelden. In films als 2012 en Independence Day: Resurgence was het de taak van de Compositor om onze wereld te vernietigen door een hele reeks vernietigingsactiva te combineren met 3D-gemodelleerde steden en live-action platen.
