Posttraumatische stressstoornis (PTSD) is een psychiatrische aandoening die kan optreden bij mensen die een traumatische gebeurtenis hebben meegemaakt of getuige zijn geweest, zoals een natuurramp, een ernstig ongeval, een terroristische daad, oorlog / strijd of verkrachting, of die met de dood zijn bedreigd seksueel geweld of ernstig letsel.
PTSS is in het verleden onder vele namen gekend, zoals "shell shock" tijdens de jaren van de Eerste Wereldoorlog en "bestrijding van vermoeidheid" na de Tweede Wereldoorlog, maar PTSD komt niet alleen voor bij veteranen. PTSD kan bij alle mensen voorkomen, ongeacht etniciteit, nationaliteit of cultuur, en op elke leeftijd. PTSD treft elk jaar ongeveer 3,5 procent van de Amerikaanse volwassenen, en naar schatting één op de 11 mensen zal tijdens hun leven de diagnose PTSD krijgen. Vrouwen hebben twee keer zoveel kans als mannen om PTSS te hebben. Drie etnische groepen - Amerikaanse Latino's, Afro-Amerikanen en Amerikaanse Indianen - worden onevenredig zwaar getroffen en hebben hogere percentages PTSS dan niet-Latino blanken.
Mensen met PTSD hebben intense, verontrustende gedachten en gevoelens die verband houden met hun ervaring en die lang na het einde van de traumatische gebeurtenis voortduren. Ze kunnen de gebeurtenis opnieuw beleven door middel van flashbacks of nachtmerries; ze kunnen verdriet, angst of woede voelen; en ze kunnen zich onthecht of vervreemd voelen van andere mensen. Mensen met PTSD kunnen situaties of mensen vermijden die hen aan de traumatische gebeurtenis herinneren, en ze kunnen sterke negatieve reacties hebben op zoiets gewoons als een hard geluid of een onbedoelde aanraking.
