Onderhandelen is een methode waarmee mensen meningsverschillen oplossen. Het is een proces waarbij een compromis of overeenstemming wordt bereikt terwijl ruzie en geschillen worden vermeden.

Bij een meningsverschil proberen individuen begrijpelijkerwijs het best mogelijke resultaat te bereiken voor hun positie (of misschien een organisatie die ze vertegenwoordigen). De principes van eerlijkheid, het zoeken naar wederzijds voordeel en het onderhouden van een relatie zijn echter de sleutels tot een succesvol resultaat.

Specifieke vormen van onderhandeling worden in veel situaties gebruikt: internationale aangelegenheden, het rechtssysteem, de overheid, arbeidsconflicten of binnenlandse relaties als voorbeelden. Algemene onderhandelingsvaardigheden kunnen echter worden geleerd en toegepast bij een breed scala aan activiteiten. Onderhandelingsvaardigheden kunnen van groot belang zijn bij het oplossen van eventuele verschillen tussen u en anderen.

Stadia van onderhandeling
