Tekenen is een vorm van beeldende kunst waarbij een kunstenaar instrumenten gebruikt om papier of een ander tweedimensionaal oppervlak te markeren. Tekeninstrumenten zijn onder meer grafietpotloden, pen en inkt, verschillende soorten verf, penselen met inkt, kleurpotloden, kleurpotloden, houtskool, krijt, pastelkrijt, gummen, markeerstiften, stylussen en metalen (zoals zilverstift). Digitaal tekenen is het gebruik van een computer om te tekenen. Gebruikelijke methoden voor digitaal tekenen zijn onder meer een stylus of vinger op een touchscreen-apparaat, stylus- of vinger-naar-touchpad, of in sommige gevallen een muis. Er zijn veel digitale kunstprogramma's en apparaten.
Een tekeninstrument geeft een kleine hoeveelheid materiaal af op een oppervlak en laat een zichtbare markering achter. De meest voorkomende drager voor tekenen is papier, hoewel er ook andere materialen zijn gebruikt, zoals karton, hout, plastic, leer, canvas en karton.
