Autisme is een aangeboren pervasieve ontwikkelingsstoornis die zich kenmerkt door beperkingen op het gebied van sociale interactie en (non-)verbale communicatie en door een beperkt, repetitief of stereotiep gedragspatroon.
De stoornis is op jonge leeftijd lastig te diagnosticeren. De diagnostische criteria, vastgelegd in de DSM-IV-TR, vereisen wel dat bepaalde symptomen reeds vóór het derde levensjaar duidelijk worden. Hoewel de diagnose tegenwoordig doorgaans vroeg gesteld wordt, komt het ook nog vaak voor dat autisme pas op latere leeftijd duidelijk wordt, bijvoorbeeld wanneer er sprake is van een normale of bovengemiddelde intelligentie. Dit komt met name door gewijzigde diagnostische criteria. Zo werd vóór de introductie van de DSM-IV in 1994 het syndroom van Asperger, een vorm van autisme die samengaat met een normale of bovengemiddelde intelligentie, nog niet onderkend. Autisme kan niet genezen worden. Vroeger dacht men dat alleen mensen met een verstandelijke handicap autistisch konden zijn. Tegenwoordig wordt autisme als grotendeels onafhankelijk van de intelligentie beschouwd.
